Okay, maybe I was a bit harsh on the old beemer - this Jag isn't a whole lot better is it? I suppose it looks great as a cheerful toy slot car for kids, which it was. But don't forget matchbox's quality origins and it's reputation for detail.

In real life this was a fire breathing racing car with a throbbing 5.3 litre engine. The 1979 UK Catalogue is littered with images of the creme and dark blue works Jaguars.

But we got this version. I call it the 'Rainbow car' because it looks like it should be sat on a shelf behind Zippy & George...
