The VeeDub is a great addition to the Powertrack lineup - and an unexpected one too. The VW was a Group 5 Touring car racer but pretty much made up the numbers - it did well to get noticed by Powertrack, which suggests there was more to be had from VW trying to market the Scirocco in the US.
The VW was actually one of the earliest cars to arrive from Matchbox, appearing in 1978 at the same time as the prototype Funny car & Police Car. Early cars were more red than orange in trim colour, and the '22' number appeared on the doors, even though are lacking in this photo.
On the arrival of the PT-8000 four lane racing set, Matchbox issued the superb Gold Scirocco. Apart from the kitsch font used on the numerals, this is a fabulous Powertrack car, and is the only version to feature painted rear lights.
The VW is very popular on ebay, but I remember at the time it seemed to be quite hard to obtain. None of my stockists had any, but then I remember all of them complaining that they only got what Matchbox sent them - never what they asked for or what the rep. promised...
Perhaps that was the beginning of the end?
